If we want to view on the map the values of a specific calculated variable for all elements in the network at a given moment, categorised by colour or as labels, we can use the results panel to manage this information. These values are also dynamic and change over time. But what if what we want to display on the map are the static values of a specific physical property of any element, categorised by colour ranges? This is the purpose of thematic maps, which complement the results maps.
The new option in the Queries menu opens a dialogue box from which we can select the property to display on the map, with options sorted by element type. From this dialogue box, you can enable or disable the various thematic maps.
The thematic map layers are located in a subgroup within the Queries group, and are overlaid on the layers in the Inputs group. A default classification is automatically set according to the chosen property, which can be edited in the QGISRed Legend Editor to make it permanent. The attribute table displays only the ID and the property of the selected map, sometimes expanded, whilst the other properties remain hidden.
For each map, in addition to the symbology, care has also been taken with the formatting of the information displayed in the labels and map annotations, so that several properties can be combined within the same label.
In fact, the thematic maps share the same files as the layers in the Inputs group, so any edits to the data in these layers are automatically reflected in the thematic maps. Indeed, editing the layers of the thematic maps is not permitted, in order to standardise editing operations.
